Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of permits and certifications are required to have lasers at my event?
Laser DesignWorks operates worldwide and regulations differ based on location. In the US, all laser show manufacturers are required to maintain a FDA Variance. In some states, a certified Laser Safety Officer (LSO) may be required, and in New York this LSO is required to reside in and be licensed by the state of NY. Shows in Texas, Florida, Oregon, and Arizona require an advanced show notification and/or permit. Many states require registration of the laser units used in their jurisdiction. Laser DesignWorks operates by US FDA Regulations (ANSI Z136.1 & Z535, IEC 60825-1, OSHA) or local laws, whichever are stricter.
How big does my event have to be to have lasers?
The power of our lasers is appropriate for outdoor events, festivals, large clubs, theaters, arenas, and stadiums. Please contact us for more information if you have any questions about whether your venue is suitable for lasers.
Why don’t I just let my LD operate the lasers?
Laser DesignWorks operators use the industry-standard laser software Pangolin Beyond. A Lighting Designer can use their Grand MA to achieve simple flashes and color changes if given a cue palette, but an experienced Beyond programmer utilizes a wider variety of parameters to offer more complexity and precision in the laser element of your show.
Can I permanently install lasers in my venue?
Absolutely! This will require you to obtain an FDA Variance, purchase a Pangolin Beyond software license (or have a laser expert produce cues for your LD to utilize on their lighting desk) and install an E-Stop system. Laser DesignWorks is here to help!
